Jack Dykinga Travels Arizona

Jack Dykinga has published his first book devoted entirely to the state of Arizona. The coffeetable book, written and photographed by Dykinga with a foreword by Charles Bowden, captures the diversity of the state in more than 120 images.
The 128-page, 11 x 11 hardcover is available at bookstores or through Westcliffe Publishers for $50.

The cool waters of Coyote Creek run past a cottonwood in Utah's Glen Canyon. "I first noticed this shot while backpacking down the canyon and was really drawn to the triangular lines," says the landscape photographer Jack Dykinga, the subject of this issues profile. "I had originally envisioned the tee as yellow, but hadn't turned yellow yet, so i had to comeback a few weeks later, on a three day hike to get it just right."

On April 20, I had the opportunity to put PhotoMedia's 13 years and my publishing career in perspective when I attended the 50th annual Maggie Awards for publishing excellence in Los Angeles. Last year, PhotoMedia won one of these prestigious statues in the Best Interview or Profile in a Trade Publication category, but I was unable to attend and receive the award in person, as the event's schedule conflicted with production deadlines on our Spring 2000 issue.
